About Me Deep Dive
Under 50 kg (1999) → 75.52 kg peak (Apr 2025). Real numbers, real photos, no fairytale. And the full story behind it.
"Genetics was my excuse. Discipline became my answer."
I was the guy who trained, ate, tried everything and still looked the same for far too long. Not because I didn't want it enough. But because I lacked structure.
Hardgainer Performance Nutrition® was born from real friction: 25 years of testing, discarding, refining. No fairytale. No shortcuts. The full story — from Wiener Neudorf in 1999 to the founding in Vienna Donaustadt — is on this page.
First photo: 2002 (training started 1999, ~3 years earlier). The short version is in the Founder Story · Overview: About Us.

The Origin
Wiener Neudorf · 1999 · Training Begins · Under 50 kg
I started training in 1999 in Wiener Neudorf — as a student, under 50 kg.
Around 2001, I moved to the strength centre in Vienna Donaustadt.
We trained in standard gyms with standard plans — and the results were mediocre. Around us, we saw others making progress — sometimes with means that were never an option for us. But the discrepancy drove me. Why does it work for them and not for us? So we searched. Relentlessly.
I had two very close training partners back then, both from the Baden district. We trained together, pushed each other and didn't let each other quit. We stood in the gym with stopwatches and wrote down every set — logged, analysed, adjusted. It didn't make us popular. The others in the gym gave us grief. We kept going.
Typical Arnold-style volume training didn't work for any of us. Too much fatigue, too little growth. Then we found the principles of Mike Mentzer in the online community BBSzene — one of the largest German-speaking fitness forums of the early 2000s. Heavy Duty. One set to absolute failure. 60 seconds concentric, 60 seconds eccentric. Super Slow. After that the session was over — 10 to 15 minutes. We were coached by experienced members of the community, and coached others in turn. I eventually moderated the Hardgainer and HIT sections of the forum.
The Kraftsportzentrum of Franz Mares in Vienna Donaustadt then became my home. Not the nearest gym — but the right one. There I trained with serious athletes, we attended powerlifting competitions together, and there the community emerged that shaped me as a coach and as an athlete. We educated ourselves, exchanged knowledge, kept refining — until I developed a system that truly works for this body type.
In 2004, I lost my brother. That shifted a lot of things — including my focus on training. But training has always remained part of my identity. It carried me through that time and made me stronger. Twenty years later, I made the decision to found a company, and in 2025 Hardgainer Performance Nutrition® was born. Health is the one thing you cannot buy back. That principle guides everything we do to this day.
What Didn't Work — and What Did
Four mistakes that cost years. And the three building blocks that completed the system.
Too many sets, too much fatigue, too little recovery. For hardgainers with limited recovery capacity, high volume is the first problem, not the solution.
Useless as a standard recommendation for someone with chronically low appetite. The calorie surplus still didn't happen — the plan made the problem worse, not better.
Tried everything, understood nothing. Without knowing what the body needs and why, every supplement is roulette — no matter the price.
Motivation is finite. It's enough for the start, not for months. What carries: system, habit, protocol.
What worked: three building blocks, not one.
Training: Heavy Duty / Super Slow as the foundation — intensity over volume. Maximum stimulus with minimum volume, adapted to hardgainer recovery capacity. From this, the KKKD protocol was developed.
Nutrition: Plannable calorie surplus, adapted to the body type. Not "eat more" — but knowing what, when, how much.
Protocol: Measure everything, write everything down. Make progress visible. Without tracking, there is no system.
None of these building blocks works alone. The interplay is the system.
From Tuna in a Shake to Our Own Formula
The supplement story is a chapter of its own — and the direct path to the conviction that things can be done better.
Early 2000s · Trial and Error
The supplement market of the early 2000s was opaque. A lot was promised, little was verifiable. We tried everything anyway — every booster, every amino acid product, from glutamine to creatine to the mass gainers of the time. Tuna and eggs in the shake. Anything that had calories and went down halfway. It wasn't enthusiasm — it was necessity.
On the side, I ran an eBay reseller shop for supplements — those were the days before social media, before any kind of market transparency for the end consumer. Through thousands of euros in self-tested products, I learned what works, what's well tolerated, and what was simply marketing.
At 18, I wanted to open the first supplement shop in the SCS — the shopping centre near Vösendorf, basically around the corner from Mödling. Because even then I was convinced that supplements can close the gap — if you have the right ones. It never happened. But the idea never left.
On holiday, I had my supplements with me. Always. No matter where. This obsession with the subject eventually brought me to the point where off-the-shelf products were no longer enough.
So I started developing my own formula. Not because there's nothing good on the market — but because after 25 years of self-testing I know exactly what works for hardgainers and what doesn't. Clean sources, clear dosing, considered composition. That's the direction we're building in.
Why the System Is This Precise
This is not a collection of certificates. This is the background that explains why the Hardgainer Performance Nutrition® system is built the way it is.
Father gynaecologist, grandfather orthopaedic surgeon, aunt pulmonologist. VO2max tests, lactate tests, SpO2 measurements on my own body. Regular sports medicine check-ups since the 2000s. Decades of independent study in nutrition science and training physiology.
International Business Administration from 2005, Mag. degree 2012. Then 13 years in controlling — reading numbers, interpreting deviations, adjusting systems. The methodology behind every HGPN tool.
Coaching in the immediate environment since the first years at the strength centre. 2002 Frankfurt: first external coaching — classic hardgainer and body composition case. Over 20 years of coaching experience.
Forum moderator of the Hardgainer and HIT sections in the BBSzene community. Not just an active member and coach — but curator and point of contact for the entire hardgainer niche in the largest German-speaking fitness forum of the early 2000s.
The same mindset that led to a stopwatch in the gym in 1999 —
was professionalised over 25 years.

Frequently Asked Questions
Short and honest. So you get to action faster.
Why do you show numbers and photos so openly?
Because hardgainers don't need fairytales. I've been training since 1999 and I've seen it all: building muscle is often tedious, unglamorous and sometimes chaotic. Numbers, photos and context show you what really happens and how to steer it.
Why is the first photo from 2002 if training started in 1999?
Because in 1999 nobody was systematically taking progress photos. Training definitely started in 1999 in Wiener Neudorf; the first documented photo came about 3 years later. The progression before 2002 is real — it's just not photographically documented.
What was the biggest lever from starting point to today?
The switch from volume training to Heavy Duty / Super Slow — and the realisation that recovery capacity is the real bottleneck for hardgainers. Combined with: plannable calories, clear progression, solid recovery. Not the perfect plan, but consistent execution over months.
What is KKKD and where does it come from?
KKKD is a training protocol developed by Christian Schönbauer together with coaches from the BBSzene community, based on the Heavy Duty / Super Slow principles of Mike Mentzer, adapted for the hardgainer lifestyle. No foreign system copied — iterated until it truly worked for this body type.
Do I need supplements to gain weight as a hardgainer?
No. The foundation remains: calorie surplus, training with progression, sleep. But: as a hardgainer, execution is often where it fails. Many products are marketing or poorly tolerated. That's why we're building our own: simple, hardgainer-suitable, clearly dosed. Amplifiers, not replacements.
Why does your weight drop at times in your progression?
Because real progressions have phases: build, peak, reset. Stress, activity, sleep and deliberate body fat management shift the scale. What matters isn't "always up", but knowing why something happens and how to counter-steer.
How do I find my next step in the Hardgainer Performance Nutrition® system?
Diagnosis via the Hardgainer Test, planning via the Tools, execution via one clear focus per week in the Hardgainer Mission Briefing™.
Can I submit my own transformation?
Yes. Below you can send your story. Selected transformations will be published on the website and on social media.
